This week we meet the maker behind Melbourne based project Inside Outside, Martha Poggioli.
Tell us a little about your background.
I studied Fine Art, Fashion at QUT in Brisbane and graduated in 2009. I have since worked in studios, retail spaces and galleries in various roles, until a couple of years ago when I decided to initiate a self-directed project - having no idea really what it would be. I've spent the last couple of years playing, exploring, thinking and making.
What was the motivation behind starting your own business?
It began with the aim to pursue the experience of simultaneously making and designing. I like to think of clothing as a housing facility for our bodies. The kind of house that you don't want to leave, that is as beautiful and pleasant to inhabit both inside and out.
Talk us through your design process.
The studio acts as a place of research, exploration, development and play with the goal to address problems relating to mass production and consumption. I am interested in the notions of time, process and our spatial experiences in everyday life. Inside Outside reflects these ideals in designing pieces that have been made with longevity in mind, made in a way that is good for you and good for our world.
What is inspiring you at the moment?
I have been looking at these four works of art as a starting point to the next collection:
Sternenfall - Anselm Kiefer / The Fall of the Rebel Angels - Frans Floris / Svayambh - Anish Kapoor / Goethe am Fenster seiner Wohnung in Rom - Johan Tischbein
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
There is no typical day! I wear many hats!
Do you have any tips for aspiring designers?
Enjoy the process.
What are you most proud of in your career to date?
I'm really proud to have produced this first collection with the support of lovely retail spaces like Kinobi.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself someplace with terrific thunderstorms, in a dreamy studio / house compound with a killer vinyl collection, there's a large body of water nearby and I've mastered the work/life balance.
How do you like to spend your days off?
Bed, bath, sun, bath, bed
What did you eat for breakfast?
Avo on toast
