This week we meet Iris and Mara, the designers behind cult Melbourne womenswear label Thursday Sunday. They give us an insight into their creative process and studio....

Can you tell us a little about your backgrounds - what did you study/where did you work before launching Thursday Sunday?

Iris: Studied Commerce and have worked in Banking/Financial Services for over 5 years.

Mara: Studied Graphic Design at Monash Uni.

What was the motivation behind starting your own business?

We both shared the drive and passion to create something for ourselves and something that we loved. Mara's mum is a dressmaker and Mara and I always found ourselves flicking through magazines, blogs and spending way too much time designing pieces that Mara's mum created. Our curiosity has evolved into Thursday Sunday - something we love and are so passionate about.

You manufacture in-house in your Melbourne studio. How important is that to your creative process and business?

Very important - every aspect of the label from the admin, business, design, sampling and production is all done in one place. The studio is constantly buzzing as it is a very 'hands on' space to work in with a lot going on, but it is an organised chaos that is a constant source of motivation and inspiration.

What does a typical day at work look like?

It always starts with a coffee and then running any errands. The rest of the day in the studio varies, depending on the time of the year we could be doing production, sampling, designing, planning or shooting our new campaign.

Do you have any tips for aspiring designers of small business owners? Anything you wish you had known at the start?

1. Always be true to yourself in the way you design and approach the industry

2. Never take yourself too seriously and try to have fun with the process

3. Little details are very important, always start small and work your way up.

What are you inspired by at the moment?

Fabrics are always an inspiration for us. The way different fabrics mould and react to different designs. The simple beauty of certain fabrics and how they can make a garment.

What are you most proud of in your careers to date?

Creating a successful business from scratch with little money and no previous experience.

Where do you see yourselves in 10 years?

Happy and doing something we love!

How do you like to spend your days off?
Iris: Sleep in, cook something for brunch at home and if the weather is nice go for a long drive, ride or just hang somewhere outdoors.
Mara: Sit somewhere nice and have a coffee. If the weather is nice the beach is always good. Try to do as little as possible.

Thanks to Iris and Mara for answering our questions!
